Day 04 → Your favorite book
Of all the innumerable books in the world you expect me to pick just one? No can do, sorry.
As it's probably been obvious I've been on a Dresden Files kick lately. Since I got the e-files I've gone through the first two books. The storylline has been good and I really like the viewpoint Butcher has put into things. Yes, I will never stop being touched that he considered the whole "symbol of faith" thing when he wrote the series. So many books deal with the supernatural and magic, yet fail to give the pentacle anything but a symbolic status. The fact that in DF the Pentacle works for Harry the way a Crucifix works in most fiction? Is pretty damn awesome to see.
I like Anita Blake, admittedly not as much now as I used to do, but I do like the series. I'm still kind of wishing for the days when it was more preternatural mystery and less sex though as the sex has pretty much eaten the plot more or less. Still, I really like the characters in the series, which is likely the only reason I'm still reading it. (Though I think I'm a book or two behind right now.)
Uglies/Pretties/Specials by Scott Westerfield also deserves a mention I think. I picked up the series, years later, from a recommendation from a friend of mine. The viewpoint it offers is prety deep on some levels offering a rather interesting take on physical beauty as well as cultural and racial differences. After all society, at the beginning of the first book, has decided that such things just get in the way of humanity's development. So they put in a practice that changes everyone to give them some sort of standard to conform to. People all end up with roughly the same shade of skin, their facial features are designed to point to no specific heritage, and they're re-designed to look pretty in the process.Which I'm sure is great in theory, but didn't work so well in practice.like socialism and communism
Also, my guilty pleasure books are random paranormal romances. Be they time travel, psychic, witch, preternatural creatures, etc, etc. I guess you could say I have a thing for magic period, huh.
